NETDUMP collector <USE>

the netdump collector appears as a columnar window which always occupies the left side of the screen when launched. however, the window can be moved horizontally by leaning (clicking and holding) on the background of the collector using the left mouse button. in this way, the client can be moved sideways off the screen when it is not in use, thereby occupying only a small amount of desktop space (similar to the windows taskbar) but is always instantly available.

you can simply double-click the collectorıs background to quit the collector or access the collector-preferences page.

SEARCHING FOR DATA ON NETDUMP:

in this listbox ('only this extension') a fileextension if you choose one of the listed extensions (these are all the extensions registered by netdump for automatic sorting) or specify any other in the field, only files which have this extension are searched for.

you should not add your own categories to the second listbox ('files in this fileformat'). the list already contains all of the file type categories registered by netdump (e.g. 3D-GRAPHIC, ARCHIVE...) and you can choose one of these to search only for data found in that category.

by entering a string of characters into the field 'only files with this string in their name', a search can be carried out which returns only those files containing the specified string in their name.

under the heading 'files with this maximum of filesize', the search can be narrowed down to files smaller than a specified maximum size.

this button initiates a search according to the search criteria specified above. if no search criteria have been specified, the search cannot be carried out, i.e. it will be unsuccessful.

THE SEARCH RESULTS:

the files found are displayed here with the following information: waste category, name, file size in bytes, date and time of package deposition (month, day, year and time).

/////////////////////////////////////
DOWNLOAD/ STREAMING:

to download files from netdump to your local harddisk, simply select the desired files in the list of search results and click on 'download selected files!' before a file is downloaded, the package information (author/ waste generator and content info) is displayed. only then is the complete file downloaded. the status of the download of each file is shown as a thin white bar across the collector window.

to prevent having to download entire files just to examine their content, there is an option which allows files to be streamed. unfortunately, this process is currently supported only by very few formats.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOWNLOADED DATA:

this listbox contains all of the names of files which have been downloaded in the current session, including the local path to each one. by choosing one of the entries in the list, the appropriate package information is displayed also. hence all newly downloaded files can be viewed sequentially and saved or just previewed. usually all downloads are saved in the netdump system folder on the startup disk.

this text field displays the information about the author / waste generator of the current download.

the field 'package information' describes the individual package, or, rather, its contents.

this field contains information about the number of copies of the current download still available from netdump.

clicking this button reveals the current download item (provided it has been completely downloaded) either directly in the netdump mediaplay window (provided that mediaplay supports previewing of the file type) or in the application which has been registered to open this type of file locally.

to save the current download item locally (see point 9) , a target location MUST be specified here. this is the only way of guaranteeing that the download will still exist when the collector or the recycle bin are next launched. this is because the netdump system directory only serves as storage for temporary data and is automatically cleaned up and erased from time to time!

///////////////////////////////////////
the collector's mediaplay window is responsible for rapid previews of downloads (regardless of whether they are images, videos or sounds). however, only those data can be displayed which are supported by mediaplay. on low resolution screens, mediaplay appears as a separate window. on screens with resolutions above 1152x864 (which is the optimum), the mediaplay is fused graphically with the collector. the button bar (on the right) allows navigation through moving pictures and sounds. double-clicking a moving picture opens it in full-screen mode.
